A Champagne update: Much Ado about Nothing // The Trademark Lawyer Magazine

29 July 2021

The Trademark Lawyer Magazine released an article “A Champagne update: much ado about nothing” by Vladimir Biriulin, Russian Patent Attorney, Partner (Gorodissky & Partners, Moscow), which became a refutation of numerous publications with erroneous interpretation of the new law №345-ФЗ of July 2, 2021 “On Making Amendments to the Federal Law On State Regulation of Production and Circulation of Ethyl Alcohol, Alcoholic Products and on Curbing Consumption (Drinking) of Alcoholic Products” and certain legislative acts of the Russian Federation". The criticized publications erroneously indicated that the new law prohibits French producers from using the designation "champagne".

This article explains the recent amendments made to the Federal Law №171-ФЗ of November 1995 concerning the wording “champagne” on imported alcohol.
